Indiana Board Nominees 09-11
Here are the short paragraphs that I requested from those running for the Indiana USAG Board. If those running are not found, please contact them so they will turn something in.
Daniel Poe Running for North Rep
I have been involved in gymnastics since 1962 (and I'm still alive) and my late wife and I started Gymnastics Michiana in 1981 with a goal to be able to give the best that we could for our gymnasts and to let them have fun in a safe environment. I have been the state chairman as well as the North Representative and have always enjoyed working with the other members of the board to try and implement the various suggestions which the coaches in our state have made. I feel that our state has made tremendous advances toward our gymnasts improvement and camaraderie with the state and regional camps.. I know that it has helped Gymnastics Michiana gymnasts and it makes the meets more fun. If elected, I will try to carry out the mandates of the USAG as well as our state and its coaches..
Rob Surber Running for North Rep
A coach since 1988. Owner of Lakeshore Gymnastics & Dance in Chesterton since December 2006. Coaching experience includes: YMCA (3 years), High School (8 years), Club (21 years). Has been both a USAG and High School Official. Coaches all levels and ages at Lakeshore and at camps throughout the Country. I am passionate about gymnastics and wish to have a more active role in the State. I understand the needs in Region 5, am a good listener, have a good relationship with officials and coaches alike, and I don't sit on my hands when something needs to be done. I can be a positive voice for those who need to be heard.
Larry Rigney Running for Central Rep
Hello: My name is Larry Rigney and I would like to announce my candidacy for The Indiana State Board central Rep. I have been judging gymnastics since 1997 currently my rating is a level 10. Also during this time I have coached at two well respected gyms in the state. With my daughter leaving for college in the fall, being on the board would be a good way for me to give back to the sport of gymnastics. I will always make myself available for your questions, comments or concerns and represent all clubs equally. Thank You in advance for your consideration.
Joan DeVeau Running for Vice Chair
Joan DeVeau would like to be re-elected to the vice-chair position for the state of Indiana. She has a good mastery of this job having filled the position for the past 12 years. She has the organizational skills and the contacts to organize the state banquet, oversee the state leotard orders and plan for and distribute the regional leotard.
Joan has been honored to be a part of the gymnastics community in Indiana for the past 27 years. As a gym owner, she has watched and guided her program including serving as a coach for the level 3 team and supporting one of her gymnasts make the Olympic team. It has been quite a journey!
During her time acting as the vice-chair, Joan has watched the state grow in all levels. She would like to continue to be a part of this growth and help in any way that she can to make Indiana a leader in Region 5.
Ruth Balthis Running for South Rep
For those of you who may not be familiar with me, I grew up in Richmond, Indiana and graduated from Richmond High School in the top 25% of my class. After high school I attended Ball State University, graduating in 1971 with a teaching degree in Physical Education/Health/ Driver Education and Mathematics. I taught in public schools for 19 years in both Indiana and Florida where I taught and coached gymnastics as well as judged high school gymnastics. In 1981 I earned a masters of education degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and began coaching in a Junior Olympic program . By 1985 I had purchased the gym and in 1988 I became the director and head coach of Richmond Gymnastics Training Center, a not for profit facility dedicated to safely providing the highest quality physical education in the gymnastic arts to students of all ages and levels. We have been a USAG member club from the beginning. We have hosted sanctioned meets and participated in sanctioned meets around the state and in the region. The training center is not large and our team program is not intensive. We train 6 to 9 hours per week and many of our gymnasts participate in other activities. I have a belief in the benefits of the sport and a passion for gymnastics that goes beyond the competitive arena. I think I can bring a unique perspective to the board as the director of a not for profit facility as well as a representative from a smaller gym. Feel free to contact me if you are in the south voting district and need further information, I’ll be glad to speak with you.

Rachel Smeja Running for North Rep
I am currently the North Rep and owner of Perpetual Motion in Valparaiso, IN. I have been involved with gymnastics pretty much my whole life, coaching for the past 12 years. Having a fresh young perspective on the board is something that I feel is very necessary. I have a lot of ideas to offer and have always been very involved with USAG events, attending National and Regional Congress each year and staying up to date with all that is going on in the gymnastics world. I am very organized and motivated to make a difference as your voice in the state.
Holly Lewis Running for Web
My name is Holly Lewis and I have owned the Gymnastics Junction for 27 years. I have coached all levels during these past years and continue to do so. I have held this position for 2 years, and really enjoyed giving back to the State of Indiana. I have tried to respond with speed and accuracy to any problems or questions that have been presented to me. If I could not solve the problem myself, I have related these issues to Ed Gibson and Geoff Rupe as quickly as possible. I attend many competitions throughout the year with various levels, and try to keep in touch with as many gyms as I can. I am trying to serve my position with honesty and integrity, and most of all, fairness to all clubs. Gymnastics has been my passion and career, and I would like to give back by serving on the board again. Thank You.
Trudie Miller Running for Vice Chair
I have been very fortunate to be involved in Indiana gymnastics for over 35 years as a club owner, coach, judge, parent and now grandparent of a gymnast. Gymnastics has been and continues to be my passion.
I have talked to many club owners, coaches & judges in Indiana as well as many other States for the past several years and feel I have a good idea of the direction our State would like to go in.
I have been a member of the State Admistrative Committee in the past and have hosted many large events both as a club owner and meet director. I have organized and hosted large dance events as well.
If elected, you can count on me to listen to your concerns, get answers to your questions and represent you with respect as a fellow professional member.
I would appreciate your vote in the coming election.
Paul Kemp Running for Vice Chair
I am running for the South Representative Board position. I have been a board member for 16 years. I am asking for your vote and support for the 9th time. I have enjoyed working with our current board to improve the level of gymnastics, the numbers of athletes, and improve the safety of our support through the education of our members.
I have been a part of our gymnastics community for 29 years as a parent, club owner, coach, equipment supplier, and Indiana USAG Board member. I consider my board position important and a pleasure to serve our athletes, coaches, and gymnastics community.
Kevin O’Brien running for central rep.
Terra O’Brien, my wife, and I have owned Hoosier Gymnastics Training Center for 22 years. I have been on the board for 12 years. I have helped in beginning the level 4, level 3, and Prep Opt programs. I would like to continue representing the central clubs and professional members. Thank you for your past and future support.
